AUGUSTA A. WHITE
(1929- November 20, 1991)
The North Carolina Association of Family and Consumer Scientist has proudly established a fund to memorialize Augusta A. White, one of the most outstanding leaders of our profession.
Augusta was a Home Economics Consultant from 1962 to 1991. During those years Augusta was instrumental in getting school systems in Eastern North Carolina to make a difference in the lives of many teachers and students.
We lost a storehouse of knowledge when we lost Augusta. To talk to her was to experience the past, get an update on the present, and be allowed a glimpse into the future. When Augusta's professional knowledge base was combined with her gutsy enthusiasm things happened.
Living in Raleigh for many years, Augusta stayed abreast of political issues that would help families and home economics education. Her work with legislative issues helped the members of our organization realize the influence NCHEA (now NCAFCS) could have on public policy. Augusta pushed for legislation pertaining to women and the law, and providing safe, affordable child-care facilities for working parents.
Members of this profession knew Augusta expected our organization to be a "mover and a shaker" in the area of family life education in North Carolina. Augusta's legacy of academic excellence and professional development will live on through the many lives touched by this great woman. During Augusta's term as state president of our organization, increasing membership and leadership development were her prime issues. The Augusta A. White Memorial Membership/Leadership Fund is fittingly designed to promote these two issues.
